Newcomer and Ethnic Market Research

Diversity in Canada

The face of Canada is in a state of profound change.  According to Statistics Canada, between 2006 and 2031, the number of immigrants (first generation) in the country will double and one in every four people will have been born outside the country.  Furthermore, since the beginning of the millenium, the cultural diversity within immigration has increased rapidly.  Between 2006 and 2031, diversity will have almost doubled along each of the following dimensions:

  • The proportion of visible minorities (increase from 13% in 2001 to 31% in 2031)
  • The proportion of non-native English or French speakers (increase from 19% in 2001 to 30% in 2031)
  • The proportion from non-Christian religious denominations (increase from 6% in 2001 to 14% in 2031).

Change is happening even faster in large cities.  Already today, visible minorities represent 40% of the populations of Toronto and Vancouver and 16% of that of Montreal.  In 2031, these numbers will increase to 60% and 30% respectively.

Companies and organisations that seek growth cannot but adapt to these changes because immigration today accounts for nearly half of Canada's population increase.  Morever, newcomers and ethnic minorities represent high potential markets in a number of areas.
