Employee recruitment and retention challenges
The labour market in Canada in undergoing profound change with the birth rate dropping and the active population aging. Statistics Canada estimates that between 2005 and 2031 the number of workers per retiree will have dropped by half (from 5 to a little over 2 workers per retiree). As a result, employers now have to stand out from their competitors to be able to attract the few qualified workers while also finding ways to retain those they have already trained and integrated.
The challenge ahead is even harder given that the pool of new workers to choose from and integrate is very different from that which the average employer was dealing with just 10 years ago. The issue is no longer about recruiting and integrating women and workers with disabilities. Today, diversity is more a question of age and of cultural differences. Employers who succeed will be those who manage to attract and retain these new workers and also capture the creativity and capacity for innovation inherent to this workforce diversity.
